Coalition for Chemical Safety Commends Lautenberg for Listening
Urges more direct dialogue
(Washington, DC) – March 9, 2010 – Today’s hearing of the Senate Subcommittee on Superfund, Toxics and Environmental Health is a commendable effort by Subcommittee chairman Senator Frank Lautenberg to hear from a diversity of players in the debate over reform of our nation’s chemical safety laws. It is widely believed this third such hearing is the final one to be held before introduction of new legislation to reform the Toxic Substances Control Act.
“While we are pleased Senator Lautenberg is listening and encouraged that reform of the Toxic Substances Control Act is moving forward, the Coalition for Chemical Safety calls for additional discussions involving industry, regulators, environmentalists and others with a role in this debate,” said Coalition Executive Director Joe Householder. “People involved in this issue from the left, the center and the right all agree that TSCA reform is needed. That’s the good news. The risk is unless all of the parties are talking about the specifics, progress toward real reform may be stymied.”
“One thing we certainly don’t want is for the TSCA reform effort to become ‘Health Care Reform – the Sequel.’ We don’t want a bunch of warring factions all saying they’re for reform while intentionally or otherwise undercutting one another. We need everyone involved to talk it out,” Householder said.
The Coalition for Chemical Safety and its more than 200 members across the country support a balanced reform of the Toxic Substances Control Act – one that protects public safety, promotes American innovation and preserves American jobs. “We’re not going to get there unless all of the power players in this debate sit down at the table and find common ground. While we appreciate and support today’s effort at gathering input this, alone, is not enough. To learn more about TSCA reform and to join the Coalition for Chemical Safety, visit us at
